Hackathon: International Space Apps Challenge

The International Space Apps Challenge is your opportunity to build, create, and invent new solutions to challenges of global importance and shackspace is happy to announce that you can join this effort right here in Stuttgart, Germany. shackspace teamed up with AerospaceResearch.net to host a weekend long hackathon (shackspace wiki).
Among the many and still growing numbers of challenges there’s also a few thought up by our fellow colleagues of AerospaceResearch.net. Brightest Night‘s aim is to build a network of webcams to measure the ever increasing amount of light pollution introduced by growing urban areas and the spread of civilization into the furthers reaches of formerly untouched nature. A fundamentally different question is posed by Tour of the Solar System which tries to determine if and how it would be possible to visit all the planets of our solar system with a simple Voyager class probe.
You’re free to post your own ideas or pick any idea you want and work on it.
About the International Space Apps Challenge
The International Space Apps Challenge is a 2 day technology development event during which citizens from around the world will work together to solve current challenges relevant to both space exploration and social need. The International Space Apps Challenge will take place on all seven continents – and in space – on 21-22 April 2012.

TinyMega: ATmega32U4 breadboard-compatible prototyping with tiny footprint

A little while ago @dop3j0e offered, for the second time, an SMD soldering workshop. Contrary to the previous workshop, the boards were professionally manufactured which made soldering even easier. Furthermore, version two of the workshop boards were even more tiny than the previous ones!
I’m sure by now you’re asking “Cut to the chase, what the heck did you solder?”
It’s @dop3j0e’s TinyMega, an ATmega32U4 breakout and prototyping board.

On-board USB-Controller (Low Speed, Full Speed, Host or Device) - Ultra-tiny footprint of just 39×22 mm
- USB bootloader pre-loaded – super easy firmware loading over USB!
- 16 MHz clock frequency
- Buttons for reset and entering bootloader mode
- 2 LEDs (green to indicate power, red optionally connected to a GPIO-pin)
- All I/O pins of the microcontroller, including power, can be conveniently accessed via two rows of pin headers. The 2.54mm spacing perfectly fits your breadboard.
- All pins, LEDs, buttons are conveniently labeled on the silkscreen.
- Power over USB or external (5 V stabilized)
- Dirt cheap — total parts cost is around 8 EUR, excluding the PCB. (your mileage may vary depending on quantities ordered)

Vortrag: BWL für Geeks, Nerds und Hacker

Am Mittwoch den 14. März 2012 lädt shackspace zum Vortrag “BWL für Geeks, Nerds und Hacker“.
Wer keine Lust auf BWL hat weil ihm Bilanzen, Kostenrechnungen und Gesetze nerven kann beruhigt durchatmen: diese Themen werden nicht behandelt.
Zur Vorbereitung auf den Vortrag ist allen die eingehende Lektüre von Scott Adams’ Dilbert nahegelegt.
frogpond wird in seinem Vortrag folgende Themen näher beleuchten:
- Organisation (Strukturen und Abläufe)
- Organisationsdesign etc pp.
- Organisationspsychologie und „Menschen in Teams/Gruppen/Abteilungen/Organisationen“
- Innovationsmanagement, strategisches Management, Technologiemanagement und noch mal Innovationsmanagement

- und wenn es ganz arg sein muss auch noch WI / Wirtschaftsinformatik

Kurzfristig treffen sich am heutigen Abend (Dienstag, 6. März 2012) Fans und Produzent Tim Pritlove von, unter anderem, CRE: Technik, Kultur, Gesellschaft und anderen Podcasts im shackspace zu einem gemütlichen Hörertreff.
